”TEKAPO BLUE”

Oil on canvas 90 x 70cm (36 x 28 inches)

I travelled to Lake Tekapo, located in the South Island of Aeoteroa / New Zealand in 2009. I travelled alone from Cape Town with no idea what world would be awaiting me on the other side!

I was greeted by the most iridescent blue water I have ever seen! Lake Tekapo is known for its most unusually bright blue water. Its absolutely surreal! I learned that this colour is due to the reflection of the ice sediment within the water. During the spring season the wild open spaces also explode into a vast display of Lupin flowers. Offering up a feast for the eyes with a variety of shades of bright pinks, purples, whites and deep blue.

It is this unique image which inspired me to create this painting.
